Alliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration

ASSE and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have entered a strategic alliance to advance mine safety and health.

The ASSE-MSHA Alliance was signed in July 2003 at ASSE's PDC in Denver, Colorado. Click here to see a copy of the agreement and news releases from ASSE and MSHA on this precedent-setting event.

As with nearly all Society activities, ASSE's involvement is member-driven and led by an implementation team whose members are

Kevin Thimmesch -- Vice President EHS and Risk Management, Compass Minerals Group, Overland Park, KS

Wesley W. Harkins -- Director, Safety and Health, National Gypsum, Charlotte, NC

Dr. Christopher J. Bise -- Professor and Program Chair of Mining Engineering and Industrial Health and Safety, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania

Dave Heidorn, ASSE Manager of Government Affairs and Policy.

Participating also is the Chair of ASSE's Mining Practice Specialty, Randy McBurnett.

The first meeting of the alliance was held in November at the MSHA Training Facility in Beaver, West Virginia. Minutes from the meeting are attached.

Get involved! Stay tuned for more information on how you can be a part of the Alliance, maybe the most important part. MSHA is looking for ASSE members who want to work with their offices across the country to further safety and health - a great opportunity to build relationships with MSHA and advance safety and health at the same time!
