Coming Soon: American Society of Safety Professionals

These are exciting times for our Society. On June 1, 2018, we will officially change our name to American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). We will also launch a new website with new functionality and introduce a new design for Professional Safety.

We Must Be Change Agents

As the safety profession evolves, it is natural to assess whether we are increasing our influence on workplace safety. Are we advancing as individuals? Is the profession improving? Let’s look at some data.

Your Vote Influences Our Future

Each March, ASSE members elect leaders to serve at the board, council, region, practice specialty, common interest group and area levels. As members of a professional organization, I believe it is our fundamental duty to review the candidates’ information on the ASSE elections web page, then cast our votes via electronic ballot.

Continuing Education in 2018 & Beyond

One primary focus of a professional organization like ASSE is to provide our members with continuing education opportunities that help you advance your career, address emerging risks, enhance capabilities, achieve and maintain certifications, or share effective intervention methods. Because of our focus on and investment in this strategic area, ASSE is the premier education provider to our members and the OSH professional community.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

As this new year unfolds, many of us are reflecting on accomplishments from last year and envisioning even greater achievements in the coming year. Over the last few weeks, many of us have spent time talking with family, friends and colleagues about where we have been and where we hope to go.

The Role of Research in OSH

One of our key goals this year is to expand the Society’s commitment to research. As OSH professionals, we need evidence-based practices to drive our decision making and inform our efforts to develop standards of practice. Research will also help us fill gaps in our body of knowledge, which will enable us to convince more employers to implement safety and health management programs.

Setting the Standard

As safety professionals, we work with voluntary national consensus standards each day. These standards are vital to our continued efforts to eliminate hazards, reduce risks and prevent injuries.

Paving the Way to Professional Excellence

As a signatory to the Signature accord, ASSE agreed to support the OHS Professional Capability Framework developed by INSHPO. This framework defines the roles, skills, knowledge and qualifications recommended for university-educated OSH professionals and vocationally trained practitioners. It is a consensus document based on a multiyear analysis of data from international professional associations and certification bodies.

Engage in ASSE Member Communities

ASSE connects more than 37,000 OSH professionals in 80 countries to a vast range of peers, resources and opportunities. Through these connections and our active participation in these communities, we are growing the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to create a safer, stronger future for workers around the world.

Let’s Promote Our Value

In the past few years, most ASSE members have heard the phrase value of the safety profession many times. It refers to the Society’s efforts to advocate for the profession, promote our professional abilities, and demonstrate to key stakeholders who we are and how we contribute to organizational performance. It also encompasses ASSE’s efforts to constantly assess how safety professionals must adapt, change and improve to deliver greater value.
