Setting the Standard

As safety professionals, we work with voluntary national consensus standards each day. These standards are vital to our continued efforts to eliminate hazards, reduce risks and prevent injuries.

Paving the Way to Professional Excellence

As a signatory to the Signature accord, ASSE agreed to support the OHS Professional Capability Framework developed by INSHPO. This framework defines the roles, skills, knowledge and qualifications recommended for university-educated OSH professionals and vocationally trained practitioners. It is a consensus document based on a multiyear analysis of data from international professional associations and certification bodies.

Engage in ASSE Member Communities

ASSE connects more than 37,000 OSH professionals in 80 countries to a vast range of peers, resources and opportunities. Through these connections and our active participation in these communities, we are growing the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to create a safer, stronger future for workers around the world.

Let’s Promote Our Value

In the past few years, most ASSE members have heard the phrase value of the safety profession many times. It refers to the Society’s efforts to advocate for the profession, promote our professional abilities, and demonstrate to key stakeholders who we are and how we contribute to organizational performance. It also encompasses ASSE’s efforts to constantly assess how safety professionals must adapt, change and improve to deliver greater value.

Make a Difference

As I start my year as Society President, I think of all the volunteer leaders with whom I have worked over the past 38 years in various chapters, work groups, committees and boards of directors. Their passion, combined with their willingness to contribute time, share ideas and support the Society, has truly made a difference. I am committed to continue making a difference and I ask you to help me make our profession and organization better.

Hail & Farewell

"Serving as ASSE president this past year has been an opportunity of a lifetime, and I am grateful that members entrusted me to lead this great organization," writes 2016-17 ASSE President Tom Cecich in his final message to members.

Time for a Change?

ASSE's Board of Directors approved two recommendations 1) Change the organization’s name to American Society of Safety Professionals. 2) Adopt a new logo. Both of these changes will now go before the House of Delegates for a vote on June 19.

The Challenges Facing OSH

I was recently asked by Safeguard, a New Zealand publication, to share the U.S. perspective on key challenges facing the OSH profession. I’d like to share those thoughts with you as well.

Position Yourself to Win

For safety professionals, what does preparing to win look like? It means we continuously build our business skills and technical capabilities. We establish what we do well and understand what uniquely prepares us for the next opportunity. We determine what we need to do to make ourselves most valuable to our organizations or to potential new employers.

Standards: Influencing the Practice of Safety

As we all know, OSHA standards are only a starting point for ensuring worker safety. Many are outdated and less protective than other measures. That is why voluntary consensus standards are so vital. The consensus process brings together diverse parties—companies, government agencies, academics, individuals and others—with a direct interest in the subject matter.
