ASSE Supports India's International Conference on Safety
October 12-13, 2012, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Rising safety and health requirements, greater global industry demands and an evolving economy make India a prime spot for SH&E professionals to learn from and network with other industry experts. In fact, India is making headway in the SH&E field by hosting the International Conference on Safety, taking place Oct. 12-13 at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) in Ahmedabad city, state of Gujarat, in western India. ASSE proudly supports this conference which will bring together international researchers, educators, safety officials, engineers, policy makers and consultants to explore solutions for India's pressing safety challenges.
According to Ashok Garlapati, Administrator of ASSE's International Practice Specialty, when the first India Chapter launched in Chennai in March 2012, it had about 50 members. Now, ASSE's India Chapter has more than 100 members. "This indicates the potential for SH&E professionals in the country, as well as an urgency for professional advancement through resources like ASSE," Garlapati says. India represents a growing audience for the Society, and there is great interest from local professionals to create more local chapters and student sections in India, with the potential of creating ASSE's first student chapter in India at IITGN.
"We'd like to reach every corner of India," says Jitu Patel, CPEA, who along with Garlapati led the effort to form the India Chapter. "Logistically it makes sense and allows for more interaction." With more chapters in India, especially the addition of student chapters, members can attend chapter meetings at a consistent and convenient pace. This will provide additional networking opportunities, Patel adds.
At the conference, both local ASSE India chapter members and U.S. members will present at technical meetings and at the successive International Workshop on Process Safety Management that will take place on Oct. 14-15 at the IITGN campus. ASSE representatives will also discuss membership benefits and other relevant materials and information during the conference.
