Safety Management Specialist (SMS) - NEW!

The Safety Management Specialist (SMS) certification is intended for dedicated safety practitioners with ten years of experience in occupational safety or health, with or without a college degree. This 3-day course will prepare candidates for the SMS certification exam. It will cover the five exam domains and enforce concepts through lecture, activities, and practices questions.

Target Audience

This course is intended primarily for the OSH professional who is preparing for the SMS certification exam. It also might be of interest to those in other management positions who have some responsibility for OSH, are interested in SMS certification, and can meet the BCSP application requirements.

Learning Objectives

  1. Examine comprehension of the SMS domain areas and form the foundation of knowledge and skills required for SMS certification
  2. Practice valuable success strategies for passing the SMS exam
  3. Recognize EOHS management system concepts including:
    1. Key performance indicators
    2. Goal setting and prioritization
    3. Safety training needs assessment
  4. Identify risk management concepts such as:
    1. Hazard prevention and control
    2. Job hazard analysis versus risk assessment methods
    3. Prevention through design
    4. Liability
    5. Insurance
    6. Risk reduction through hierarchy of controls
  5. Address physical, chemical, ergonomics, and workplace safety issues to recognize and control those stressors.
  6. Apply incident investigation and emergency preparedness concepts to calculate incident and injury rates.
  7. Effectively communicate business impact of safety issues to upper management including:
    1. Cost/benefit analysis
    2. Cost indicators
    3. Budgeting
    4. Multi-employer worksites
    5. Safety committees
    6. Risk management
