CRITERIA FOR CANDIDATES FOR SOCIETY OFFICE
I. INTRODUCTION
While we desire only the best qualified candidates for these positions, we must also keep in mind that the qualifications must not be so demanding that (almost) no candidates could meet those qualifications.
Due to the nature of these Society elected positions, each of the candidates should possess these "Overarching Qualifications." These criteria are in excess of the qualifications as defined in the Bylaws.
- Professional Member in good standing of the Society.
- Involvement in Society affairs on a Society Council, committee or task force.
- Has made positive and identifiable contributions to the Society and the safety profession. This would be determined by awards, promotions, patents, publications, successful implementation of programs proposed by the candidate or proposed by groups chaired or directed by the candidate.
- Chapter, Practice Specialty or Region/Area service.
- Brings to the office an understanding of the Vision of the Society and the safety profession.
- Strong organizational and decision making skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- Good motivator with ability to organize and accomplish projects.
- Has demonstrated support of Society mission, objectives and strategic plan.
- Has represented the Society in a professional manner, and always presents the image ASSE would wish to portray.
- Has read, understands and acknowledged the responsibility and obligations of top elective office in ASSE.
- Has employer support.
II. SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
This officer progresses to President without further election. This person, as the future Society President, will be the guardian of the organization's soul, the guardian of integrity, the image of the Society, one we would choose to be the role model of ASSE and the profession.
Criteria for Senior Vice President candidates are:
- Supports ASSE's objectives/purposes.
- Will represent ASSE in a professional manner with Board, Regions/Areas, Practice Specialties, Chapters, Sections, membership and staff.
- Will represent ASSE in a professional manner as liaison with other professional organizations.
- Will represent ASSE in a professional manner with governmental agencies/legislators.
- Has ASSE Society level involvement such as service on the Board of Directors, on a Council, a Practice Specialty Administrator, or a Society committee.
- Has made contributions to advance the Society and the Profession.
III. VICE PRESIDENT OF FINANCE
This is an Executive Committee position.
- Previous Finance Committee or Strategic Planning Committee experience preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic financial management and accounting practices. This position is heavily supported by staff.
- Should have served as Chapter or Region Treasurer.
- Bring to the office a vision and understanding of strategic financial needs of the Society.
- Strong organizational and decision making skills.
- Strong communication skills.
IV. VICE PRESIDENT OF COUNCIL ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Should have ASSE Professional Development Conference Committee experience or experience on the PDC Planning Committee, or experience on a Chapter or Region/Area Conference Committee.
- Visionary with foresight for high level, state-of-the-art future professional development programs.
- Not necessarily an educator, but should have a clear knowledge of how the education process works.
V. VICE PRESIDENT OF COUNCIL ON PROFESSIONAL AFFAIRS
- Previous experience on any of the following committees: Governmental Affairs Committee, Region/Area/Chapter or state governmental affairs committee, Educational Standards Committee or Technical and Professional Recognition Committee.
- Clear understanding of the role of Professional Affairs.
- Academic accreditation experience or knowledge of processes.
- Visionary of direction for the safety profession.
VI. VICE PRESIDENT OF COUNCIL ON PRACTICES AND STANDARDS
- Previous experience on the Standards Development Committee, or national consensus standards committee, or
- Previous experience as a Practice Specialty Administrator or
- Professional Development Conference Planning Committee experience..
- Research experience is desirable.
- Diversified professional experience in the broad practice of safety.
VII. REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Regional Vice Presidents shall:
- Be a Professional Member of the Society for one year prior to taking office.
- Reside, or be employed, and must hold their primary ASSE chapter membership in a chapter within the Region the RVP represents.
- Be elected by members of the Region represented.
- Have held one of the following offices: Chapter President, Area Director, Practice Specialty Administrator or Society committee chair for one year.
