Enhance Your SH&E Knowledge With ASSE’s Opportunities

Safety in the Petroleum Industry Virtual Symposium
Sign up for ASSE’s Safety in the Petroleum Industry virtual symposium to examine best practices from industry experience and lessons learned from the recent oil discharge disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The symposium is scheduled for Sept. 21-23, 2010, but may also be viewed in recorded sessions. The symposium will focus on emerging safety and health issues, environmental issues within the oil and gas industry, and emergency response planning and execution.

Rethink Safety: A New View of Human Error and Workplace Safety
ASSE’s fall symposium aims to provide a new way to manage safety by examining human error. Todd Conklin, Ph.D., of Los Alamos National Laboratory, is a recognized authority on organizational behavior and he will provide the keynote address at Rethink Safety: A New View of Human Error and Workplace Safety.  “In the work we do, people are going to make mistakes. This is both normal and predictable. What we need to do is mitigate the consequences or outcomes of those mistakes,” Conklin said in an interview published in the March 2009 issue of Currents. “We have begun to shift from blaming workers to giving them the resources they need to succeed.”

During his keynote address, Conklin will discuss what is behind human performance and why SH&E professionals need to understand human error before they can improve safety. The symposium will be held Nov. 4-5, 2010, in San Antonio, TX.

SeminarFest 2011
Choose from more than 50 seminars and earn up to 5.0 CEUs/COCs during SeminarFest 2011, scheduled for Jan. 23-29, in Las Vegas, NV. The week-long event provides participants with various networking opportunities and options to fulfill their continuing education needs.

Safety 2011’s Chapter Pavilion Program
Be an important part of ASSE’s 100th anniversary celebration and encourage your chapter to participate in the Chapter Pavilion Program. At Safety 2011, every ASSE chapter can showcase its accomplishments, service projects and provide attendees with an overview of future events. Safety 2011 attendees can learn more about their local chapter and learn new ways to become involved in the Society. All chapters may order a complimentary kiosk or booth to be included in the pavilion. Acceptance forms must be sent to ASSE by Friday, Nov. 1, 2010. Contact Cindy Milner-Kornfeld for additional information.

Help ASSE celebrate its 100th anniversary at Safety 2011, scheduled for June 12-15, 2011, at Chicago’s McCormick Place. A toolkit, tips and resources are available online to help members prepare for the celebration. Registration will open in mid-December.

Elevating Safety Through Standards

ASSE has added the A92 aerial lift standards from the Scaffolding Industry Association (SIA) to its catalog of voluntary consensus standards.

• ANSI/SIA A92.2-2009: Vehicle-Mounted Elevating and Rotating Aerial Devices. This standard relates to the following types of vehicle-mounted aerial devices: extensible boom aerial devices, aerial ladders, articulating boom aerial devices, vertical towers and any combination of these devices. The vehicle may be a truck, a trailer or an all-terrain vehicle.  
• ANSI/SIA A92.3-2006: Manually Propelled Elevating Aerial Platforms. This standard applies to manually propelled, integral chassis aerial platforms which have a platform that cannot be positioned completely beyond the base and are used to position personnel, along with their necessary tools and materials, at work locations. Platforms are adjustable by manual or powered means and shall not be occupied when moved horizontally.
• ANSI/SIA A92.5-2006: Boom-Supported Elevating Work Platforms. This standard applies to self-propelled integral chassis aerial platforms which have a platform that can be positioned completely beyond the base and are used to position personnel, along with their necessary tools and materials, at work locations. Aerial platforms are power operated with primary functions, including drive, controlled from the platform. Such aerial platforms are intended to be occupied when driven.
• ANSI/SIA A92.6-2006: Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms. This standard applies to manually propelled, integral chassis aerial platforms having a platform that cannot be positioned completely beyond the base and are used to position personnel, along with their necessary tools and materials, at work locations. Platforms are adjustable by manual or powered means and shall not be occupied when moved horizontally. 
• ANSI/SIA A92.8-2006: Vehicle-Mounted Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Devices. This standard applies to vehicle-mounted bridge inspection and maintenance devices that are generally designed to be supported on bridge surfaces of varying degrees of grade and super-elevation and can provide quick and easy access to the underside of such structures. The standard also includes drawings showing typical examples of covered devices. 
• ANSI/SIA A92.10-2009: Transport Platforms. This standard applies to transport platforms that are primarily used to vertically transport authorized person, along with materials and necessary tools, to various access levels on a building or structure for construction, renovation, maintenance or other types of work.

ASSEF Grants & Scholarships Program Welcomes New Additions

ASSE Foundation’s (ASSEF) 2011 Scholarship and Professional Development Grant program is underway and applications are available for download.

New this year is the $1,000 Military Service Scholarship. Established by ASSEF trustees, this award provides support for students with a military background pursuing a safety degree. To qualify, students must be enrolled in a safety degree program with at least 60 completed hours.

ASSEF has also implemented new criteria for the $1,000 America Responds Memorial Scholarship. In addition to being a U.S. citizen who is pursuing a safety degree, the qualified student must have experience working as an emergency responder.

Philadelphia Chapter Turns 75

The Philadelphia Chapter is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Chartered on July 1, 1935, the chapter is one of the Society’s oldest. The chapter credits its success to its more than 550 members. Their active participation and support are key to success in promoting safe and healthy workplaces, and the SH&E profession, the chapter says.

Over the years, the Philadelphia Chapter has hosted professional development seminars, and many of its members have participated in presentations and conferences including ASSE’s Professional Development Conference. Its members have also contributed to various standards projects. In 2007, the chapter hosted an emergency management conference in cooperation with the Penn-Jersey Chapter to explore lessons in emergency response learned from the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy. The chapter helped with ASSE relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina, and made donations to the Red Cross Disaster Fund, while promoting the cause and encouraging chapter members to do the same. In addition, many chapter members have been recognized for their service and involvement with ASSE. This year, Philadelphia Chapter member J. Nigel Ellis received the Fellow Award, ASSE’s highest honor.

HP Hood Employees Reach Out to Their Communities

Employees from HP Hood who are also ASSE members reached out to their communities to teach safety best practices. HP Hood’s Senior SH&E Director David Crowley, CSP, CHMM, led a company-wide effort and encouraged all employees at Hood plant locations to participate in 2010 NAOSH Week, and he provided tools and activity examples to many locations. A professional member of ASSE’s Greater Boston Chapter, Crowley also made a generous donation to a local food pantry in Canton, MA.

John Timmerman, an HP Hood SH&E manager and Central New York Chapter member, visited the LaFargeville Community School and spoke to students about safety and environmental sustainability. He also showed a presentation about the HP Hood Crowley Foods processing plant.

HP Hood SH&E Manager Tom Wertman hosted a fire department tour at the Concord, NH, plant. In addition, Wertman, a Maine Chapter member, raised safety awareness among plant employees.

HP Hood Regional SH&E Manager Peter Van Derlyke, CSP, who is also a Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter professional member, helped distribute safety posters on injury prevention at the HP Hood fluid milk plant in Binghamton, NY.

Finally, Marty Hinkle, a Philadelphia Chapter member, coordinated safety table displays for each department at Rosenberger’s Dairies, where he is SH&E manager.

Delhagen Contributes to Company’s Performance

Pinner Construction Co. Inc. has received The Gold Excellence in Safety Award from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Liberty Mutual for being 24% lower in recordable incident rate and 150% lower in lost-time work case rate than the Bureau of Labor Statistics national averages for general contractors. The company was involved in six LAUSD projects, logging 632,140 workhours from April 30, 2009, through May 1, 2010. The company’s safety director is Tim Delhagen, CHST. He is a member of the Los Angeles Chapter and the Construction Practice Specialty.
