ASSE Names Chapters of the Year

Chapter Stars Logo

This year, 35 Society chapters earned Chapter Star status. The best among those chapters (in each of three categories: small, medium and large) are recognized with Chapter of the Year awards. This year, ASSE recognized:

  • Snake River Chapter (small). The chapter consistently provided superior technical education sessions, while reaching out to SH&E partners including city, state and federal officials, OSHA, EPA, and fire and rescue professionals. The chapter also partnered with Boise State University to create several continuing education workshops. Each year, the chapter cosponsors a week-long free safety training event, Safety Fest of the Great Northwest.

  • Greater Chicago Chapter (medium). The chapter is working locally to develop greening industry safety standards, a “Breakfast with OSHA” series geared toward small businesses in struggling neighborhoods, and a graduate student mentoring program with the chapter’s University of Illinois at Chicago Student Section. The chapter also organizes community events such as food drives.

  • Arizona Chapter (large). The chapter supports four Arizona sections: Construction; Healthcare; Phoenix Student Section and Embry-Riddle Student Section. It is currently focusing on membership growth and developing sustainable chapter leadership through organization and transitional activities. The chapter and its members support Region II and ASSE through volunteering for various projects throughout the year.

The chapters and their presidents were recognized during a special luncheon at Safety 2010. In addition, each chapter received $1,000, a $500 stipend to send a chapter representative to the annual conference to accept the award, recognition on a plaque at ASSE headquarters and an award for the chapter president.

ASSE Recognizes NAOSH Week Champions

Members who went above and beyond promoting NAOSH Week and Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day in 2010 were presented with a NAOSH Week Champion Award at Safety 2010. This year, seven members were awarded for their efforts to promote workplace safety.

OSHA Administrator David Michaels in the Spotlight at Safety 2010

David Michaels Speaking

During his plenary session speech at Safety 2010, OSHA Administrator Dr. David Michaels called ASSE members the “silent heroes” in today’s workplaces, and thanked those in attendance for their tireless efforts to protect workers. Michaels also laid out his priorities for the agency, pointing in particular to the need for an injury and illness prevention program rule, higher fines for workplace safety violations and an improved recordkeeping system. During the interactive session, he also responded to ASSE member questions delivered via video and text. Click here to view the full speech.

Transportation Safety Virtual Symposium: July 20-22

Transportation center

To provide members with high-quality learning opportunities that are also affordable and convenient, ASSE will continue its series of virtual symposia with Best Practices in Transportation Safety, July 20-22. This 3-day event will be delivered entirely online, and allow participants to learn best practices and new techniques, interact with industry experts, and network with colleagues from around the world. Attendees can participate in the live sessions, or view the recorded sessions for up to 30 days.

The event will feature a special presentation by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Matt Richtel, whose recent New York Times series on distracted driving helped to spark government action. In addition, attendees can take part in an interactive panel discussion on CSA 2010 Comprehensive Safety Analysis.

“We designed the Virtual Symposium as a way for people to engage in relevant, real-world learning, at a time and place that’s most convenient to them,” says Dan McNeill, ASSE’s manager, education development. “Even though the symposium is delivered over a 3-day period, all of the sessions are accessible on-demand, as soon as a live webcast wraps up. And with the ability to post questions to speakers in the Virtual Symposium Network, the learning can extend beyond the original live event.”

ASSE Welcomes New Military & Legal Services Branches

ASSE has expanded its practice specialty arena by adding two branches—the Military Branch and the Legal Services Branch.

Marine Flag

The new Military Branch, under the International Practice Specialty, provides networking opportunities for active duty, reserve and National Guard members who work in the occupational SH&E field. In addition to networking, these members will be able to identify opportunities for operational activities and provide a forum for open discussion about safety issues in military services.

eyeglasses and scales

The new Legal Services Branch, under the Consultants Practice Specialty, provides a forum for lawyers, legal professionals and expert witnesses with expertise in SH&E. The branch aims to provide resources, referrals, connections and interactive services for consultants seeking legal expertise or for those who seek legal input into consultancy decisions.

To join either branch, contact ASSE Customer Service Department at (847) 699-2929.
