Women In Safety Engineering Group Launches WISE 100 Project
ASSE’s 100th anniversary is Oct. 14, 2011. As part of the Society’s anniversary celebration, ASSE’s Women in Safety Engineering (WISE) common interest group is honoring 100 women who have or are currently making a difference through their work and dedication to SH&E. In October 2009, WISE began honoring up to four women in its triennial newsletter and will continue to do so through October 2011. The group will then consolidate the profiles into a single publication, 100 Women—Making a Difference in Safety, which will debut at the 2011 ASSE Leadership Conference.
According to WISE, honorees will be diverse. “Not all will be public figures, well known or famous. They will be everyday heroes making a difference in the lives of others through their commitment to protecting people, property and the environment,” the group explains. In addition, not all honorees will be ASSE members. “Some paved the way before ASSE was founded, such as Rebecca Luken, who made a difference in manufacturing safety in the 1800s,” WISE says. “Other nominees, such as Trish Ennis and Terry Wigfall, are ASSE members making a difference today.”

Safety-on-the-Job Kids’ Poster Contest Winners Announced
More than 850 posters were submitted by children from around the world—Australia, Canada, Columbia, Dominican Republic, India, Kuwait and the U.S.—for the 8th Annual Safety-on-the-Job kids’ poster contest. The theme of this year’s contest: “Mission NAOSH 2010: Safe Workplaces.” The selected posters best illustrated safety on the job. First-place winners were selected for each of five age groups:
Ages 5-6
Anna Ball, 6, Palm Coast, FL, for “Be Safe! Don’t Talk on the Phone and Drive”; sponsored by Andrea Ball, member, Central Florida Chapter.

A10.16 Comparison Document Now Available
The A10.16 comparison document supplements the new standard, Safety Requirements for Tunnels, Shafts and Caissons (ANSI/ASSE A10.16-2009) and outlines differences between the new standard and previous versions. The A10.16 standard establishes safety requirements for the construction of tunnels, shafts and caissons. It addresses environmental control, related facilities, fire prevention, hoisting, haulage and electrical, drilling, blasting and compressed air work. When constructing the structures, workers are often exposed to extreme conditions.

New Publications Help Advance SH&E Education
Refresher Guide for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals Safety Fundamentals Examination
This updated 2-volume guide provides in-depth information in for all four ASP exam domains and topic areas. Volume I, edited by Dave Langlois, CSP, contains chapter-level presentations of both probability and statistics. Volume II, written by Hamid Kavianian, Ph.D., CSP, contains multiple-choice questions, answers and worked solutions in all ASP exam domains and topics.
Applied Mathematics for Safety Professionals: Tips, Tools and Techniques to Solve Everyday Problems
This reference book explains practical uses of mathematical concepts in the SH&E field such as ventilation, noise abatement and engineering economy. It also provides examples of problems safety professionals might encounter and the tools and analysis techniques needed on a job. Probability and statistics information is provided as well as a broad base of equations in different areas. ASSE member Glenn Young, CSP, edited the book, along with many other contributors who have varied backgrounds in the SH&E industry.
Member-Get-A-Member Effort Growing
Participate in ASSE’s Member-Get-A-Member campaign. The more new members you recruit, the larger your chapter and Society are, which allows ASSE to do more for members and the SH&E profession. Each member who recruits a member receives a free gift and is entered into a drawing for a chance to win a free trip to Safety 2011 in Chicago. ASSE Announces Scholarship & Professional Grant Recipients
The ASSE Foundation (ASSEF) recently announced the recipients of the 2010 annual SH&E scholarships—totaling nearly $153,000—funded by the support of corporations, ASSE regions and chapters, members and individuals. Sixty scholarships will be given to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in the SH&E field. All scholarships will be presented in Baltimore during Safety 2010. In addition, ASSEF provides professional development grants, which are awarded to support the careers of SH&E professionals. ASSEF distributed grants to 31 ASSE members this year.

ASSE 2010 Chapter Challenge
Does your chapter want to earn money and connect with nonmembers in the area? For those on the fence about joining ASSE, now is the time to offer incentives for them to join. The ASSE 2010 Chapter Challenge is easy.
1) The challenge starts April 1, 2010.
2) Use promo code 1004CHPCHL on new applications, which allows you to offer a free practice specialty and a $25 ASSE gift certificate. This promo code must be entered in all applications submitted online or faxed to be included in the challenge total. It applies to new associate, member, international and professional members.
3) Winning chapters will be chosen based on the greatest percentage growth of chapter in each category (small, medium, large).
4) Winning chapters in each category will each receive $150. There will be two chances to win. The first will be in August 2010 for recruitment from April to July 2010. The second will be in January 2011 for recruitment from August to December 2010.
5) All chapters can place an ASSE chapter challenge participant logo on their website. Participants may contact Julie Neuleib for a copy of the logo.
6) The challenge is tied to the current Member-Get-a-Member (MGAM) campaign (see “Member-Get-a-Member Effort Growing” story).
ASSE Welcomes Two New Student Sections

University Student Section
ASSE’s Western Carolina University Student Section, based in Cullowhee, NC, and part of ASSE’s Piedmont Chapter, was chartered in January 2010. During the charter ceremony, Piedmont Chapter donated $2,000 to the section’s start-up fund and provided three $1,000 scholarships to the student section members.
Ohio University Student Section members
ASSE’s Ohio University (OU) Student Section, based in Athens, OH, and part of the Central Ohio Chapter, recently held its charter celebration dinner to recognize the student section members. Faculty advisor Helmut Paschold, professional member of the Central Ohio Chapter, attended the dinner, as did members of OU faculty, a dean, the OU provost and other Central Ohio Chapter members.

Cichetti Educates School Kids on Work Zone Safety
When Brian Cichetti, CHST, noticed school children regularly passing through construction areas during their daily walks to and from a nearby school, he decided to take action. Site safety manager for E.E. Cruz & Co. and a member of ASSE’s New Jersey Chapter, Cichetti developed a presentation for children on the importance of safely passing near work zones and construction equipment.
Making use of ASSE’s Safety Suitcase, Cichetti talked to students at New York’s Life Sciences Secondary School about safety near construction sites. The presentation focused on three important safety tips for students to remember when walking near work zones. Cichetti instructed students to always listen to flagger instructions and never walk near heavy machinery, such as front end loaders and excavators, because machine operators may not always see them. He also stressed the importance of following directions on work zone signs, such as sidewalk closed or danger.
The Safety Suitcase is a tool that ASSE provides to help members educate 4th through 6th grade students about workplace safety, as well as the SH&E profession. The kit includes an icebreaker script, career role-playing game, PowerPoint presentation and PPE.
