ASSE Election Nominations Deadline

The deadline for 2010 ASSE nominations is Aug. 15. The Society will be electing the senior vice president, vice president-finance, vice president-practices and standards, all even-numbered region vice presidents and select area directors. Members who wish to be considered for region vice president or area director must contact their regional nominations committee.



Did You Miss Safety 2009?

Eleven sessions from Safety 2009 will be available as webcast recordings. These webcasts include access to the slides, speaker audio and any videos that were part of the presentations. If you purchase all 11 sessions, you will be able to earn 1.0 CEU. For more information, contact Dan McNeill. In addition, audio recordings for most of the sessions are now available for purchase and download from Audio Visual Education Network.

Professional Paper Awards

Fred A. Manuele, P.E., CSP

First-place recipient Fred Manuele is president of Hazards Limited, in Arlington Heights, IL. His article, “Prevention Through Design: Addressing Occupational Risks in the Design and Redesign Processes,” was published in the October 2008 issue. The article discusses how NIOSH’s Prevention Through Design (PtD) initiative could cause a fundamental shift in the practice of safety that would place greater emphasis on the higher and more effective decision levels in the hierarchy of controls. Manuele is a professional member of the Northeastern Illinois Chapter and serves as a Professional Safety volunteer mentor.

John P. Springston, CSP, CIH

Second-place recipient John Springston is a senior industrial hygienist at Sandler Occupational Medicine in Melville, NY. His article, “Nanotechnology: Understanding the Occupational Safety and Health Challenges,” was published in the October 2008 issue. His article discusses how nanotechnology has grown rapidly worldwide and will likely continue to grow exponentially. It will also become yet another source for human exposure to nanosized particles, some of which will carry significant safety and health risks. Springston is a professional member of the Long Island.

Frank J. Baker, CSP, CFPS, ALCM

Third-place recipient Frank Baker is manager at Risk Management Eastern Alliance Insurance Group in Noblesville, IN. His two-part article, “Fireground Strategies and Tactics,” appeared in the February and March 2008 issues. The article provides a general introduction to fire department operations, which can help a company complete an effective prefire emergency planning process. It also covers the impact of building protective systems and construction, explains the salvage, overhaul and investigation functions, discusses firefighter safety and also suggests actions that companies can take to improve the outcome of fire events. Baker is a professional member of the Central Indiana Chapter.
