ASSE Awards Standards Medal to Marletta

The Thomas F. Bresnahan Safety, Health and Environment Standards Medal is presented annually to an ASSE member who is active in the development of voluntary national consensus standards. This year’s recipient is William Marletta, Ph.D., CSP, a safety consultant in West Islip, NY, and a professional member of the Long Island Chapter.

Marletta is an active member of several ASSE and ASTM standards committees and he helped to reinvigorate the ASTM F13 committee over the last 20 years. He has collaborated with several universities and national associations on research projects to advance slip-resistance safety standards, and he has spent the last 4 years as chair of the task group that is redeveloping ASTM F13 Safety Standard F802, Guideline for the Selection of Footwear When Considering Traction.

Marletta also worked with OSHA to establish criteria for the slip resistance of steel and decking in construction and with NFPA to develop a slip performance standard for NFPA Committee 1901 on Fire Trucks. He is an ASTM Fellow and a past recipient of ASTM’s Award of Merit, ASSE’s Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year Award and the Long Island Chapter Safety Professional of the Year Award.

The Standards Medal is named in honor of Thomas F. Bresnahan, an ASSE Fellow and retired staff member who reinvigorated the ASSE standards development program.
