Jones Receives Outstanding Safety Educator Award

Wayne D. Jones, Ed.D., is chair/associate professor, Department of Occupational Safety and Health at Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU). In addition, Jones advises more than 150 students in occupational safety and health each semester.

“Over the past 12 years, I have come to know Dr. Jones as an outstanding leader, educator and mentor,” says ASSE past president James “Skipper” Kendrick, CSP, who nominated Jones. “Under his leadership, a master’s degree program in occupational safety and health has been implemented at SOSU. In the years that I have been visiting the SOSU campus, the enrollment in the occupational safety and health program has grown from around 100 students to more than 400.”

Jones earned a joint Ed.D. in Curriculum, Research and Instruction from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He also holds an M.A. in Religious Education from South West Baptist Theological Seminary, an M.S. in Aviation Safety from Central Missouri State University, a B.S. in Business Administration and Safety Education from SOSU, and is a graduate of the Oklahoma State Municipal Police Academy.

An active ASSE professional member for more than 10 years, Jones is administrator of ASSE’s Academic Practice Specialty and is a professional member of the Southwest Chapter. He serves on the Board of Delegates, is a member of the Council on Practices and Standards, and also serves on the Future Safety Leaders Conference and Educational Standards committees. He served as chair of the Student Activities Task Force for 3 years.

In addition to volunteering with ASSE, Jones serves as president of the Faculty Senate at SOSU. The SOSU Faculty Senate honored Jones with both the Excellence in Teaching and the Excellence in Service awards. In 2002, he received the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers Award.
