SH&E Generations

Many ASSE members have parents or children who are also in the SH&E profession. Do you have a son or daughter who followed in your footsteps? Did a parent’s involvement in the profession encourage you to become a safety professional? If so, ASSE would like to hear your story. Tell us your SH&E Generations story.

2009-10 Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year Award

Mike Thompson

Michael W. Thompson, CSP, has more than 25 years’ experience in the SH&E profession. He began his career in 1980 with Chevron Corp., where he served as a safety engineer at the company’s San Francisco, Richmond and Denver locations. He then was an operations manager for an electronics manufacturing firm before joining Amoco Corp. in its Rocky Mountain operations and later in its worldwide exploration activities.

Thompson has continued to work in the oil and gas industry, and has been involved in providing safety and health services to engineering and construction employees, agricultural chemical and fertilizer plants, research laboratories, pilot plants, and refinery and marketing terminals. He holds a B.S. in Safety Engineering from Texas A&M University. Thompson currently is global heath, safety and environment advisor for BP E&P Information Technology and Services in Houston, TX.

A member of ASSE for nearly 20 years, Thompson has served ASSE at the chapter, region and Society levels. In addition to serving as ASSE president, he served 4 years as Region III vice president; was president of the Gulf Coast Chapter; and has served or is presently serving on various committees and task forces including the Public Relations, Finance, Government Affairs, Standards Development and Strategic Planning committees, and the Student Member Activity, International Membership, and Diversity and Inclusion task forces. He currently is ASSE’s representative to the International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organizations.

In accepting the award, Thompson put a unique spin on the SPY acronym. “Until this time last year, when Frank Perry approached me with a SPY nomination, I never considered anything I did to be unique in service to our profession, but rather I always considered my career to be one of great service and responsibility. Now when I reflect on the SPY acronym, to me it means ‘Service to People before Yourself.’”
