Slips and Trips Compendium

Slips, trips and falls due to preventable conditions continue to occur in workplaces across the country. To reverse this trend, ASSE and ASTM decided to select slip, trip and fall prevention standards from their own catalogues that in combination would best help employers reduce and ultimately eliminate these incidents.

While the standards included in this compendium are effective as standalone documents, both ASSE and ASTM believe that employers will appreciate having these standards, plus a technical report, right at their fingertips.

ANSI/ASSE A1264.1-2007

Safety Requirements for Workplace Walking/Working Surfaces and Their Access; Workplace Floor, Wall and Roof Openings; Stairs and Guardrails Systems

This standard sets forth safety requirements for areas where danger exists of persons or objects falling through floor or wall openings, platforms, runways, ramps, and fixed stairs, in normal, temporary, and emergency conditions. This standard applies to industrial and workplace situations and is not intended to apply to construction, residential, or commercial occupancies except where necessary maintenance or work station access may be required. Recognizing that the special safety requirements necessary for stages, orchestra pits, churches, school auditoriums, and athletic assembly occupancies may not be adequately covered by other codes or standards, this standard may provide the minimum safety performance requirements to protect the occupants.

ANSI/ASSE A1264.2-2006

Standard for the Provision of Slip Resistance on Walking/Working Surfaces

This standard sets forth provisions for protecting persons where there is potential for slipping and falling as a result of surface characteristics or conditions. Three basic areas are addressed in the standard: 1) provisions for reducing hazards; 2) test procedures and equipment; and 3) slip-resistance guidelines. The intent of this standard is to help in the reduction of falls due to conditions, which in some fashion are manageable. The standard in its present form provides for the minimum performance requirements necessary for increased safety on walking/working surfaces in the workplace.

ANSI/ASSE TR-A1264.3-2007

ANSI Technical Report: Using Variable Angle Tribometers (VAT) for Measurement of the Slip Resistance of Walkway Surfaces

This technical report discusses the technical aspects, research, legislation, standards activities, and operation of the widely-used Variable Angle Tribometers (VATs) commercially available for testing of walkway surface slip resistance: The Brungraber Mark II and the English XL.

ANSI/ASSE A10.18-2007

American National Standard for Construction and Demolition Operations: Safety Requirements for Temporary Roof and Floor Holes, Wall Openings, Stairways, and Other Unprotected Edges in Construction and Demolition Operations

This standard prescribes rules and establishes safety requirements for the protection of employees and the public from hazards arising out of or associate with temporary floor holes and wall openings, stairs and other unprotected edges including low slope roofs during, construction and demolition activities.

ASTM F1637-07

Standard Practice for Safe Walking Surfaces

This practice addresses elements along and in walkways including floors and walkway surfaces, sidewalks, short flight stairs, gratings, wheel stops, and speed bumps. Swimming pools, bath tubs, showers, natural walks, and unimproved paths are beyond the scope of this practice.

Standard Guide for Composing Walkway Surface Evaluation and Incident Report Forms for Slips, Stumbles, Trips and Falls

This guide provides a listing of items that may be useful in recording and evaluating the conditions of a walkway surface, including ramps and stairs, that may involve a slip, stumble, or trip that may result in a fall.

ASTM F1240-01

Standard Guide for Ranking Footwear Bottom Materials on Contaminated Walkway Surfaces According to Slip Resistance Test Results

This guide describes a method for ranking slip resistance test results of footwear bottom materials on contaminated walkway surfaces.
