Enhancing Safety Training Through Games and Simulations

As SH&E professionals we understand the importance of safety training. Creating compelling learning experiences that capture and sustain the attention of our audiences is the first step in ensuring that knowledge is retained.
So, if we understand that training is vital in helping to create a safe workplace, why do we so often settle for an approach that we know our learners dread – the traditional classroom lecture?
Join Linda Tapp in exploring a different approach. In this highly interactive virtual classroom session, you’ll learn how accelerated learning techniques can be applied to safety training through the use of games and simulations - with outstanding results!
We’ll also take a look at some new trends in the field of gaming and learning that may be of benefit to the safety profession. We’ll spend some time exploring the virtual world of “Second Life”, examining how some organizations are using it to build immersive and compelling “virtual” table-top style simulations.
This virtual class will take place on Wednesday – April 30th, from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM (CST).
Learning Objectives
After completing this virtual classroom, you will:
- Know why interactive class activities are an important part of a successful training session
- Be able to distinguish between a good training game and a harmful one
- Be able to use 10 different training games in safety training programs you develop
- Be able to modify safety training games to fit your needs
- Recall how gaming techniques may be applied in the creation of table-top style simulations.
- Recall how online immersive simulation tools, such as Second Life, are being used to deliver safety simulations.

About the Instructor
Linda Tapp is the Author of “SafetyFUNdamentals: 77 Games and Activities to Make Training Great!” She has taught over 1000 safety and health professionals to make their training classes better by making their classes more interactive. She is President of Crown Safety, a safety, health and ergonomics consutting firm based in Cherry Hill, NJ. She was named the Edward Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year for 2007 by the American Society of Safety Engineers. She is also the current Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals where she is serving her fourth year as a Director.
