According to the current demographic trends, by the year 2030 approximately 42% of the US population will be older than 45. It appears that preparing for an increasingly older work population will become an important consideration for those responsible for production or system performance. But, what does “preparing” mean?
On Wednesday, October 31 at 11:00 AM Central, ASSE will present the Designing for an Aging Workforce Webinar. This Webinar will be presented by Joel Haight, Ph.D., P.E., CIH, CSP. which focuses on designing systems and processes which enable the older workers to maximize productivity, minimize the error rates, while functioning normally.
As our presenter will discuss, the research literature is rich with information about the physical and cognitive capacity losses that we all experience as we age. However, this research has been done in experimental, laboratory settings and has only involved evaluating older adults participating in life skill tasks. Very little research has been done to evaluate the performance of older workers doing their regular job tasks in the work place.
How do these physical and cognitive capacity losses affect productivity and injury rates? The research literature is not so rich when it comes to analysis of job performance and we still have many safety-related questions. Would designing a work space to accommodate age-related capacity losses in older workers actually help minimize age-induced error rates and increase productivity?
Joel Haight, Ph.D, P.E., CSP, CIH is an associate professor of Energy and Mineral Engineering at Penn State University. He is also general editor of ASSE's forthcoming Safety Handbook.
