Z359 Fall Protection Code Webinar

Webinar - Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 11am-12:30pm CST

z359According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2005, non-fatal injuries and illnesses involving falls in the private industry totaled 255,750 and fatal-work related injuries due to falls in the private industry amounted to 735 deaths. Employers have new tools and resources to prevent these fall related injuries and deaths. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently announced approval of the new Z359 Fall Arrest Code, which is a new series of American National Standard Institute (ANSI)/ASSE fall protection/arrest standards. On Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 11:00 AM Central Time, ASSE will present a special Technical Series Webinar, Z359 Fall Protection Code. This 90 minute Webinar will provide an overview of the new Code and address how it will benefit SH&E Professionals.

The ANSI/ASSE Z359 Fall Arrest/Protection standards evolved from the continuing development of a fall protection standard series. These standards tie the elements of the series together and provide tools that employers may use to develop programs that incorporate such elements. The standards incorporate basic fall safety principles, including hazard survey, hazard elimination and control and education and training. They primarily intend to ensure a proactive approach to fall protection. However, they also address the reactive process of accident investigation to ensure that fall causation receives adequate attention. Included in the Code are: ANSI/ASSE Z359.0-2007, Definitions and Nomenclature Used for Fall Protection and Fall Arrest; ANSI/ASSE Z359.1-2007, Safety Requirements for Personal Fall Arrest Systems, Subsystems and Components; ANSI/ASSE Z359.2-2007, Minimum Requirements for a Comprehensive Managed Fall Protection Program ANSI/ASSE Z359.3-2007, Safety Requirements for Positioning and Travel Restraint Systems; and ANSI/ASSE Z359.4-2007, Safety Requirements for Assisted-Rescue and Self-Rescue Systems, Subsystems and Components.

Our speakers will include Randy Wingfield, Chair of the Z359 Committee and Joseph Feldstein of MSA. Both Randy and Joseph are very knowledgeable of the standards and ways to efficiently implement them in the workplace. Randall Wingfield is the founder of Gravitec Systems Inc. He has been extensively involved in the continuing development of national and international standards for fall protection equipment and training. Most notably, Mr. Wingfield is the President of the International Society for Fall Protection, Chairman of ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Z359 committee, former Vice Chair of CSA (Canadian Standards Association) Z259 Committee, and continuing member of the CSA Z259 Committee. Joseph Feldstein has served as Chair of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (USTAG) to ISOTC94/SC4 for Fall Protection since 1999. He is the Manager of Technical Services for Mine Safety Appliances Company (MSA), a manufacturer of personal safety equipment. He has over 17 years of product design and standards development experience in fall protection.
