ANSI Z87.1 --2003 Practice for Occupational/
Educational Eye and Face Protection
This revised standard for eye and face protective devices is performance-oriented in intent. Every effort was made to develop requirements that assure the wearer of protection consistent with or better than ANSI Z87.1-1989 (R 1998). The new standard recognizes the Bureau of Labor Statistics study that revealed the need for angular protection in addition to frontal protection. Results of a study by the American Welding Society have been used to update and improve requirements for transmittance of devices intended for protection against optical radiation. This standard provides minimum safety requirements to be followed while entering, exiting, and working in confined spaces at normal atmospheric pressure, but does not pertain to underground mining, tunneling, caisson work or other similar tasks that have established national consensus standards. This is a performance-oriented standard and, as such, is not intended to replace existing specific standards and procedures. Rather, it is intended to support those that meet the performance objectives defined in this standard. (Two appendices, including logic diagram for determination of confined spaces and references)

Cited in OSHA interpretations and private sector materials, the Z244.1 Standard is a significant standard used by many, if not most, SH&E professionals as a resource for addressing control of hazardous energy and lockout/tagout. The scope and purpose of the standard is to establish requirements for the control of hazardous energy associated with machines, equipment, or processes that could cause injury to personnel. The purpose of this standard is to establish requirements and performance objectives for procedures, techniques, designs and methods that protect personnel where injury can occur as a result of the unexpected release of hazardous energy. Unexpected release of hazardous energy can include any unintended motion, energization, start-up or release of stored energy, deliberate or otherwise, from the perspective of the person(s) at risk.

Denis Zeimet, Ph.D., CIH, and David Ballard
This manual is designed to help small businesses reduce occupational injuries and illness through the establishment of an effective safety and health program. Written in a user-friendly format, it is designed to be informational rather than procedural. The use of jargon and technical language is held to a minimum. ASSE’s program is meant to be used along with established policies, procedures, and work practices. Safety and Health Program for Small Businesses contains sixteen sections that address safety and health-related issues such as hazard communication, control of hazardous energy sources, and permit-required confined spaces. Each section contains tables, forms, and references to help the employer customize the manual according to specific workplace hazards and local requirements.
“We have decided to use this manual as a reference for all state departments within the State of Iowa. We feel this manual is a strong ‘refresher’ for our larger departments with sound safety systems in place, as well as ‘the backbone’ for other departments that would only require the basic safety applications.”—Barry Best, Safety Officer, Iowa Department of Personnel.

Building Successful Safety Teams
E. Scott Geller, Ph.D.
Based on the principles of behavior-based safety, Building Successful Safety Teams shows you how to implement a team-based process that enables all members to be responsible for the safety process, thereby reducing injuries and other losses.
In five easy-to-read chapters, Dr. Geller explains the functions of teams. He identifies and defines seven types of teams your organization can use to implement behavior-based safety and explains why two of them are essential to any organization. Geller then guides you step by step through the team-building process. He addresses why groups sometimes make risky decisions and what happens when teams to not work well. The book outlines the four stages of team development and tells how to build team cohesiveness using the "seven C's" of developing a trusting culture.
From there, Building Successful Safety Teams shows you how to execute the entire team process, from selecting team members to disbanding, restructuring or renewing the team. Geller gives you ground rules for effective team meetings, and helps you establish effective team goals. The book includes dozens of easy-to-reference checklists, assessment tools, diagrams, definitions, and cartoons that aid in understanding the principles and procedures.
E. Scott Geller, Ph.D. is a psychology professor at Virginia Tech University. He has written many books on behavior-based safety interventions, including The Participation Factor, published by ASSE.

Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach
James Roughton, CSP, and James Mercurio, CSP
This book presents the philosophy that working safely is a cultural issue: An effective safety culture will eventually lead to the desired goal of zero accidents in the workplace. Developing an Effective Safety Culture provides an understanding of what is needed to reach this goal. The authors tell how to build a safety management system and ultimately develop a safety program that fits the culture.
The book moves first through understanding the cost of incidents, then to perspectives and descriptions of management systems, management leadership traits, establishing and evaluating goals and objectives, providing visible leadership, and assigning required responsibilities. Valuable case studies, from the authors' own experience, are used to demonstrate the concepts presented.
