Basic Safety Administration: A Handbook for the New Safety Officer is a practical, hands-on guide that emphasizes a safe work environment over safety for compliance. The guide is useful for the novice as well as for those charged with safety in addition to their regular duties. It is also a motivational refresher for the veteran safety professional.
The guide collates the major safety standards-the reader would otherwise be required to search multiple sources. Having the codification of various safety standards referenced in one document helps the novice locate regulatory information easily. Standards information is presented in a brief overview, leaving it to the reader to seek out details. Technical information and regulatory standards appear to be current and accurate.
The goal-oriented format of each chapter builds the reader's knowledge. Information is presented in a sequence that provides the user with the fundamental knowledge and skills for planning, organizing and maintaining the elements of an appropriate safety program, with added emphasis on continued education and training.
The guide details the need for management support. Programs provided in the appendices are not all-inclusive-one cannot rely on them as the sole source for program content. In the appendix, the definitions are adequate and the safety policy letter serves as an excellent example of plant policy.
