Public Sector Practice Specialty: December Administrator's Message

As I stepped in to fill the shoes as Administrator, I was curious about the resources available to facilitate professional growth and education. As I scanned the ASSE website, I asked myself, “Did I know these were available? What about a few years ago when I started volunteering on the Public Sector Practice Specialty Advisory Committee?” I realized ASSE has much more to offer than I was aware of, especially when I was a new practice specialty member many years ago.

So I would like to discuss the volunteer opportunities and resources available to Public Sector Practice Specialty members. Many of these volunteer opportunities and resources are available to all members of our group, not just those serving on the Advisory Committee.

  • Public Sector Practice Specialty website. Visit our website to find out more about our voluntary Advisory Committee members, see our group's mission or view our blog
  • Ask the Experts. Do you have a technical question you need answered? Simply submit your question to the ASSE and you will receive a timely answer.
  • LinkedIn group. Through this group, you can network with other professionals in the public sector, find new information and postings, start a poll, ask a question or respond to an existing thread.
  • Technical papers and webinars. Contribute to professional papers and webinars sponsored by our practice specialty and delivered to safety professionals and/or published in renowned safety and health publications. While the Advisory Committee leads these efforts, you do not have to be part of the committee to contribute; simply reach out to me if you are interested in contributing.
  • Blog. Access our blog for technical information and ASSE updates. Did you know that you could receive continuance of certification (COC) points by publishing information on our blog? Reach out to our content coordinator for details. You can also subscribe to our blog through an RSS.
  • Safety 2018. Thinking about attending the Safety 2018 conference? Our group sponsors roundtables and educational sessions, serves as moderators, greeters, and minglers, and holds networking sessions. Reach out to our professional development chair if you have questions on how to be more involved
  • Bi-Monthly Advisory Committee Calls. Sit in and listen, contribute a new idea or officially volunteer for an open committee member position. Everyone is welcome. Reach out to me for meeting details and call-in information if you are interested.

Your involvement and support is essential to helping the Public Sector Practice Specialty continue to grow. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions on any available resources, please contact me to see what we have going on.

Thanks for being a practice specialty member and work safely!

Lori Schroth
