  It all began with a crumpled Humvee hulk, a rusty steel frame and an officer’s burning desire to save soldiers’ lives. The outcome was the Humvee egress assistance trainer (HEAT), which has produced measurable reductions in injuries and fatalities related to vehicle rollovers in combat zones.

  It is often difficult to estimate the magnitude of physical exposures incurred by workers in order to quantify their risks for developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Researchers recently compared the ratings in the O*NET online database with two other rating methods to assess whether the database can help SH&E professionals with this task.
   
7/2010   The Effects of Restricting Space: A Study Involving a Patient-Handling Task Safety Research

  According to many nurses, one of the most difficult patient-handling tasks is a floor-to-toilet transfer in the bathroom after a fall. The restricted space makes it impossible to team lift or use patient-handling equipment. As part of a larger study, researchers constructed a mock-up bathroom in a biomechanics laboratory to assess the effects of working in restricted space.
