On behalf of 30,000 member safety, health and environmental professionals of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), I want to congratulate you on your appointment as Chief Operating Officer of the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB).

It is only through diligent efforts to examine openly and honestly what went wrong when hazardous chemical incidents occur that improvements in handling and processing chemicals can take place. When improvements can be made, fewer workers die or are injured, and our members' professional commitment is met. ASSE is confident that your experience in occupational safety as Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides an excellent background to move CSB's vitally important responsibility forward.
