AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS

The Honorable James M. Inhofe
RE: Support for Nomination of Rixio Medina to U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board
Dear Chairman Inhofe:
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) represents more than 30,000 safety, health and environmental professionals dedicated to workplace safety. The Society's members are committed to seeing that American workplaces give every worker the best possible opportunity to go home healthy and safe each day. The Society is the largest professional safety organization and, founded in 1911, has been in existence the longest.
ASSE is proud to voice our members' heartfelt support for the nomination of Rixio Enrique Medina of Tulsa, Oklahoma, as a Member of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB). Mr. Medina is a Certified Safety Professional and a Professional Member of ASSE. He is long-time member in good standing but, more importantly, a hard-working, dedicated volunteer leader who has given his time and resources to help ASSE advance occupational safety and health among professionals both in this country and, on various occasions, internationally as well. Currently, Mr. Medina serves as the Vice President of Professional Affairs on ASSE's Board of Directors and chairs ASSE's key policy-setting committee, the Council on Professional Affairs.
Mr. Medina has directly served the interests of the public as well in his role as a member, since 2000, of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health. He also has 25 years of health and safety experience in the petrochemical industry and has taken a leading role in advancing community safety through Local Emergency Planning Committees in Texas and Louisiana.
ASSE will miss the leadership and professional abilities Mr. Medina has shared with the Society, since he will have to step down from this volunteer position on confirmation. Nevertheless, we are pleased that the President has recognized in Mr. Medina what our members have already experienced -- a consummate professional dedicated to advancing safety and health in all workplaces. The CSB and the American public could not be better served.
ASSE appreciates this opportunity to share with you and the Committee on Environment and Public Works our support for Mr. Medina's nomination and urges his timely confirmation.
James "Skipper" Kendrick, CSP
