The American Society of Safety Engineers recognizes the commitment of outstanding safety, health, and environmental professionals who take time away from their busy lives to volunteer for ASSE and nurture the field of occupational safety and health. These individuals are true leaders who develop innovative ways to protect workers from injury and illness even as they ensure a bright future for the safety profession.

Dr. Daniel Della-Giustina
Dr. Daniel E. Della-Giustina is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering and the Safety and Environmental Management Program, College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University, where he has been a faculty member for twenty-five years. Dr. Della-Giustina earned a PhD. Degree in Safety, Health and Higher Education from Michigan State University, and a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences from American International College, Springfield, Massachusetts. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees at American International College.
He is a former Administrator of the American Society of Safety Engineers' Public Sector Division. At the 1995 ASSE Professional Development Conference, Orlando, Florida, he was presented at the ASSE Division's "Safety Professional of the Year" award. He was presented the Safety Professional of the Year Award in West Virginia by Governor Cecil Underwood in 2001. Dr. Della-Giustina has appeared as an expert witness in safety and health liability cases for the past twenty years in numerous cities throughout the United States. He has served as consultant to various public, volunteer and industrial fire brigades in the areas of disaster preparedness and emergency systems. During the past twenty-five years, Dr Della-Giustina has been a member of numerous committees with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In January 1998, he was appointed a Principal Member of the National Fire Protection's Technical Committee on Industrial Fire Brigades Professional Qualifications. This standard was adopted in 2002 by the NFPA.
In September 2002, Dr. Della-Giustina was inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International at the National Safety Council's Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr Della-Giustina's most recent honor was in June 2005 when he was elected to the honor of "Fellow" in the American Society of Safety Engineers. Both of these honors are the highest honors in each of these professional safety societies.
