RE: Committee on Health Care's Consideration of HB 1659
Dear Chairman Farkas:
Enclosed is a copy of a letter from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) expressing concern over HB 1659, which would require mold professional licensing but exempt Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs) from the bill's intent to protect Florida consumers. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Health Care.
While we understand the Committee may be considering other ways to address mold, ASSE urges you to make sure that any action taken fully protects Florida consumers, does not limit their access to qualified mold professionals, and does not give one type of mold professional an unfair advantage over other similarly trained and experienced professionals. The various reasons for this are explained at length in the attached letter. In short, ASSE's more than 1200 members in Florida include CIHs but also include a variety of other qualified safety, health and environmental professionals who should be treated no differently than CIHs in any legislation considered in Florida.
ASSE stands ready to work with you and the Committee on Health Care to make sure Florida achieves its goals of both helping and protecting consumers. Thank you for your time and attention.
Mark D. Hansen, PE, CSP
