Dear Dr. Howard,
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) appreciates your continued efforts to reach out to the 30,000 safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professionals who are members of the Society. Greater involvement between our members and the work of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in advancing research and safety and health educational opportunities can only result in better ways to save lives and prevent illnesses in workplaces.
Particularly, ASSE appreciates NIOSH’s efforts to involve our members in determining the future of occupational safety and health research through the NORA Research Councils. In our several comments through the Town Hall Meeting process, ASSE suggested that the Research Councils involve representatives from the various ANSI safety and health standards committees. ASSE is pleased that your staff has responded positively to that suggestion.
As a result of our dialogue, ASSE canvassed the chairmen and vice-chairmen of each of the relevant standards for which ASSE serves as Secretariat. The response from these dedicated professionals has been overwhelmingly positive. Each has expressed willingness to participate in the work of the NORA Research Councils in whatever way can help NIOSH reach its goals. Their contact information is included below. ASSE urges NIOSH to include them at the highest levels of participation.
Again, thank you for your continued efforts to build a positive relationship with ASSE. As the newly elected President of ASSE, I look forward to an opportunity to meet and talk with you during the coming year to see how further cooperation can serve our mutual interest in advancing this nation’s commitment to safe and healthy workplaces.
Sincerely,
Donald S. Jones, Sr., CSP, PE
