RE: Support for HR 3473

Dear Representative English:

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is a professional membership organization representing 30,000 safety, health and environmental (SH+E) professionals. Our members are committed to helping workers return safe and healthy from their jobs today in every industry, every state, and increasingly throughout the world, as the attached fact sheet indicates.

On behalf of those members, ASSE offers its support for your bill (HR 3473) to provide federal occupational safety and health coverage to all government employees. ASSE has long called for a correction to the failure of Occupational Safety and Health Act to provide coverage to federal employees and to those state and municipal employees who happened to be employed in states without state occupational safety and health plans.

The seriousness of this lapse in coverage suddenly has become visible on our television screens each day as these dedicated, even heroic workers head into the dangers left behind in the aftermath of the Katrina Hurricane without being able to rely on the most basic occupational safety and health protections given private sector workers who may even be working beside them. This nation can do better.

When Congress again is faced with an opportunity to address the Katrina disaster through legislative action, your bill should be included in any package. ASSE offers whatever help we can to see that this result is reached and HB 3473 becomes law.

If ASSE or its members can be of any assistance, Dave Heidorn, Manager of Government Affairs and Policy, at dheidorn@asse.org or 847/768-3406 would be eager to work with you or your staff in achieving our shared goal.

Thank you for your leadership on this important occupational safety and health issue.

Sincerely,

Jack H. Dobson, Jr., CSP
President
