RE: Support for Stew Burkhammer as Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA

Dear Secretary Chao:

In the view of the 30,000 members of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), one of the strengths that helped John Henshaw succeed as Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was the knowledge and hands-on experience he achieved in a full career as a safety, health and environmental (SH+E) professional. ASSE believes that Stew Burkhammer, currently Director of OSHA's Office of Construction, can bring the same kind of SH+E professional knowledge and experience to the position.

Mr. Burkhammer career involved providing safety and health management leadership at the highest corporate levels in the construction industry. Following that full and successful career, Mr. Burkhammer could have chosen to advance his career in the private sector but chose, instead, to use his abilities and experience in public service and help lead OSHA's
efforts to advance safety and health in the construction industry.

Further, Mr. Burkhammer has long been a member in good standing of ASSE, is an ASSE Fellow, which is the Society's highest honor, and is a well-known, active leader in the SH+E profession. These commitments will help him continue Mr. Henshaw's emphasis on involving OSHA staff in safety and health professional activities, something ASSE has long urged.

ASSE will offer support to two other candidates in this process, but, if Mr. Burkhammer were appointed to the Assistant Secretary position, ASSE would fully support him and look forward to working with him to advance occupational safety and health in meaningful ways.

Thank you for your consideration of ASSE's views. A copy of Mr. Burkhammer's resume is enclosed.

Sincerely,

Gene Barfield, CSP
President
