On behalf of the 30,000 member safety, health and environmental professionals of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), I want to congratulate you on your appointment to the position of Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

As the attached fact sheet indicates, ASSE's members are committed to ensuring workplace safety. The mission of both the CDC and ATSDR is vitally important to assisting our members achieve their professional goal of helping ensure that all American workers can come home healthy and safe from their jobs each day. Therefore, ASSE has long used its voice in helping ensure the agencies you now oversee are provided with the resources needed to fulfill their mission. ASSE will continue that support.

ASSE is particularly pleased that you bring to your new responsibilities excellent experience in countering bioterrorism. We urge you to keep in mind that our member safety, health and environmental professionals are the front-line defenders against this and other threats facing workplaces. It would benefit America's workers greatly if we can find opportunities to work together to make sure those defenses are the best they can be. ASSE looks forward to the opportunity to do so.
