Overview of the Risk Management/Insurance Practice Specialty

Welcome to the Risk Management/Insurance Practice Specialty. We are here to serve our members in many ways. We are also here to ask for your feedback on what we do and how we do it. Given below is an overview of our activities.

Overview

As part of the Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS), the Risk Management/Insurance (RMI) Practice Specialty serves the interests of risk managers and insurance/loss-control specialists. We sponsor annual technical sessions at the Society's Professional Development Conference (PDC). We also publish a newsletter and distribute information on computer resources and on legislative and regulatory developments pertinent to risk managers/loss-control specialists.

Membership

We have over 2,800 members within our Practice Specialty, which makes us one of the largest groups. Our ability to draw upon this large resource produces solutions to many risk management questions.

RM/Insight

Our newsletter, RM/Insight, which is published three times per year, features informative articles for the risk management/insurance professional. We always welcome content suggestions for future issues of the newsletter, so if you would like to write an article (even if you have never done so before), we will work with you to get you published!

Professional Development Conference Sessions

Some presentations at the national PDC sessions are sponsored by RMI. These are listed in the conference brochures, and they provide cutting-edge information to our membership. Members who would like to participate in future PDC events sponsored by RMI should contact Mark Oldham.

ASSE Members-Only Website

We support the ASSE Members-Only website with RMI-specific information. You will have access to networking resources and SH&E information.

Mold Task Force

RMI supports the CoPS Mold Task Force with technical resources related to risk management and insurance issues.

Awards & Honors

We have an established Awards and Honors program that allows us to recognize those who contribute to our practice specialty. Awards include, but are not limited to, RMI Safety Professional of the Year, Best Newsletter Article and Best Newsletter.

CoPS Chapter Chair Support

We firmly believe that the CoPS chapter chairs must be fully informed about CoPS activities. We intend to provide the CoPS chairs with information relevant to our practice specialty.

White Paper Development

RMI has always supported the development of white papers. RMI-sponsored papers include “Understanding Crisis Management” and the “Workplace Violence Survey and White Paper.”

RMI Advisory Committee

Our Advisory Committee is responsible for many projects that support the goals and objectives of our group and of the Society. Key contacts include:

  • Mark Oldham , Administrator
  • Leslie Batterson, Assistant Administrator

Opportunities for Professional Development

ASSE and its local chapters offer many opportunities to develop leadership and teamworking skills. The practice specialties offer similar opportunities at a national level. ASSE members who wish to become involved are encouraged to join our advisory committees. You do not have to be an expert in your field—you simply need the desire to expand your horizons and the willingness to work with others.
