The Council on Practices and Standards Safety Professional of the Year for 2016 is Jim Newberry. As Assistant Administrator and Administrator of Risk Management/Insurance Practice Specialty he was appointed ASSE representative on the ISO 31000 U.S. TAG. Jim was also appointed to the newly formed Risk Assessment Institute committee in 2013, and is in his second term on this important initiative at ASSE.

Jim was a delegate on the People to People to India in 2013, where he had the opportunity to make a presentation about the Risk Assessment Institute at the Faridabad Industry Association. As a member of the Risk Management/Insurance Practice Specialty, he has served at membership chair, publication coordinator, assistant administrator, and administrator. During his eight year involvement with RM/I the practice specialty consistently achieved gold level status.

Jim has also been an active leader in the Hawaii Chapter, where he served in several positions including President and is a frequent speaker at conferences and industry events. In 2008 he was awarded the RM/I Practice Specialty SPY award and in 2010 he received the Safety Professional of the Year Award from the Hawaii Chapter of ASSE. Jim also received the Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service award in 2014. He has been a member since 1992.
