What is the Fire Protection Practice Specialty?

The Fire Protection Practice Specialty serves as a resource for safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professionals who are responsible for not only fire protection, but for prevention, preparedness and mitigation of all types of emergencies in the workplace. Since these responsibilities are common to many SH&E professionals in manufacturing, construction, government and educational services, our membership base includes representation from all of these areas. While this provides challenges in meeting the expectations of our membership, this diversity becomes an asset for providing our members with up-to-date and relevant technical information and education.

The Fire Protection Practice Specialty is not just for those whose primary responsibility is fire protection. While many SH&E professionals have at least some responsibility for fire protection, most have responsibilities in the areas of life safety, emergency action planning, disaster preparedness, workplace violence prevention and post-incident recovery.

Another primary service of the Fire Protection Practice Specialty is to provide an avenue for networking with other professionals who share similar situations and responsibilities. The contacts you will make through participation will undoubtedly serve well as membership represents some of the best and brightest minds in their respective fields of expertise.

The Fire Protection Practice Specialty publishes a triannual newsletter, Fireline. This is one of our communication tools to the Practice Specialty membership to bring them current technical information that can assist in their role as fire and emergency management professionals.

Future goals include:

  • Publishing white papers on emerging topics
  • Developing intersociety relationships with similarly focused professional organizations
  • Establishing a basic Body of Knowledge and Minimum Core Competencies for those in our specialty. This will facilitate a mentoring program to assist those seeking professional certifications.

The Fire Protection Practice Specialty sponsors related topic presentations at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference.
