The Ergonomics Practice Specialty (ErgoPS) first began as a branch of the Industrial Hygiene Practice Specialty in 2007. In addition to publishing its triannual electronic publication Interface, ErgoPS supports an Ergonomic Scholarship through the ASSE Foundation. ErgoPS also sponsors ergonomics-related sessions at ASSE’s annual Professional Development Conference and finds ways for ErgoPS members to take part in National Ergonomics Month each October.

The Ergonomics Practice Specialty serves as a rich resource of technical information for its members and gives them the opportunity to network, share best practices and discuss new ways to reduce soft-tissue injuries in the workplace. ErgoPS is also a resource to assist members in workers’ compensation claims, return-to-work programs, prevention strategies and much more. Our officers are leaders in ergonomic practices within their respective organizations, and several are Board-Certified Professional Ergonomists.

What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the applied science of equipment design (for the workplace) intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, 1999) defines ergonomics as “the science of fitting jobs to people. Ergonomics encompasses the body of knowledge about physical abilities and limitations as well as other human characteristics that are relevant to job design. Ergonomic design is the application of this body of knowledge to the design of the workplace (i.e., work tasks, equipment, environment) for safe and efficient use by workers. Good ergonomic design makes the most efficient use of worker capabilities while ensuring that job demands do not exceed those capabilities.” When defined in terms of science, ergonomics is the science of designing products that work in accordance with the way humans think, see and behave. Products that are compatible with people will dramatically reduce human error, fatigue, discomfort and stress and have a profound positive impact on overall end-user performance.

We are extending an invite to all our members to provide an opportunity to discuss some key events and projects that will occur in the upcoming weeks.

A major project that the ErgPS is initiating is a white paper that will detail the educational and experience requirements for individuals performing key tasks supporting ergonomics programs in industry, health care, office environments, etc. Our goals is to complement the core competencies laid out by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE), but focus on the individuals who may not be interested or capable of becoming certified and are seeking guidance on how to develop in this field. We will provide a quick overview of this project during this open call, and will be launching the process during our business meeting at the PDC. Anyone who is responsible for ergonomics directly, or who oversees employees and teams, is encouraged to join us at the meeting and provide your input.

In addition to discussing our white paper project, we are offering the opportunity to "Sit with a CPE". Bring your trickiest questions to the meeting, and our CPEs will provide input and advice in relation to your issues. Please submit your questions in advance to Elise Condie, Web & Social Media Coordinator.
