Larry Oldendorf, P.E., has more than 50 years' safety standards experience. He is a retired safety and fire protection engineer who from 1960 to 1985 authored several standards and guides covering ANSI/National Fire Protection Association codes.
During the 1970s, he authored two data sheets for the National Safety Council on pressurized vessel safety and confined space entry safety procedures, which were later developed into ANSI standards. Throughout his career, he served as the chair or vice chair of several standards working groups, and from 1988 to 1994, he was chair of ASSE’s Standards Development Committee. In this role, he helped develop:
• ANSI Z87.1-1989, Practice for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection

• ANSI Z359.1-1992, Safety Requirements for Personal Fall Arrest Systems, Subsystems and Components
Since 1990, he has served as a representative and now vice chair of the A1264 Accredited Standards Committee for Floors and Stairs. He helped combine the A12.1 And A64.1 standards into the single standard, ANSI A1264.1, Safety Requirements for Workplace Walking/Working Surfaces and Their Access.
In the mid-1990s, he was ASSE’s representative for several public OSHA hearings on proposed legislation. He also visited with senators and participated in special OSHA events in Washington, DC.
He contributed to the development of the new Z590.3-2011 standard for prevention through design, and he is currently a collaborator within the principal working group to propose a new ASTM standard on testing skylight human impact resistance.
