OSHA Extends Crane Certification Date By 1 Year

OSHA issued a final rule on Nov. 9, 2017, extending the requirements for construction employers to comply with its crane operator certification rule until Nov. 10, 2018. The agency also says it plans to complete a rulemaking on the issues surrounding the crane operator certification program in the coming year.

OSHA issued a final cranes and derricks rule in August 2010, then  issued a separate final rule in September 2014, extending the crane operator certification and competency requirements by 3 years. OSHA’s Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health recommended delaying enforcement of the certification requirement and extending the employer assessment responsibilities for the same period.
