WASHINGTON GROUP INTERNATIONAL’S GIFT TO AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS’ FOUNDATION PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIP &INTERNSHIP

DES PLAINES, IL (April 17, 2006) – As a result of the Idaho-based Washington Group International’s (WGI) recent donation, the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Foundation will be awarding a qualified student pursuing a career in safety and health a $3,500 scholarship. In addition, WGI will offer this student an internship and fund the expenses to attend Safety 2006. The award will be presented to the scholarship recipient at the ASSE Professional Development Conference and Exposition this June at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, WA.

Washington Group International’s vice president of environmental safety and health Brad Giles, P.E., CSP, of Boise, ID, and ASSE professional member, said, “We are pleased to aide the ASSE Foundation in providing funds to students pursuing a degree in the occupational safety and health profession, for a second consecutive year. It’s important for us to support the future of safety and health professionals-especially in the construction industry.”

The Washington Group International Safety Scholarship program is specifically designated for an undergraduate student pursuing a safety and health degree with an emphasis in construction. This year’s recipient is Nadene Yandrick, a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Yandrick will also be offered an internship in Boise with their corporate environment health and safety department on a construction project.

Applicants for this scholarship must be an ASSE student member, have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0, enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours. Special consideration will be given to students attending Central Missouri State University, Central Washington University, Colorado State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Marshall University, Millersville University, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Murray State University, Oakland University, Pennsylvania State University, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, University of Alabama-Birmingham and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Students can submit their applications for scholarships to the ASSE Foundation from September through December each year.
