Excellence in Safety Leadership Focus of American Society of Safety Engineers' Management Symposium

Des Plaines, IL (February 7, 2006) — Strengthening leadership skills for occupational safety and health professionals is the focus of the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Excellence in Safety Leadership Symposium held this March 30-31 at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore.

As part of the symposium kickoff, Dr. Marilyn Buckner, president of National Training Systems, Inc., will help attendees determine their leadership style and learn performance improvement strategies through a DiSC (dominance, influence, steadiness and conscientiousness) self-evaluation. The symposium will also feature presentations from Dr. Joseph Badarocco, Jr., business ethics expert and Harvard Business School professor, who will discuss how leadership through small, quiet decisions can determine an organization’s success; and Dr. John Howard, Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), who will discuss the differences of thought that characterize leadership and management.

The symposium offers 20 concurrent sessions covering such topics as strategies for effective safety and health management systems, leadership principles for growth, balance scorecard methodology, change management, developing a personal brand, demonstrating return on investment as a safety leadership tool, overcoming organizational politics, coaching techniques to influence organizational participation in workplace safety, and much more. Sessions will also cover the four-factor model for leadership, VOICE for Leadership (Vision, Organization, Involvement, Change and Example), and the U.S. Army’s leadership framework.

Discounts are available for members of ASSE, the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).
