NEW SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS’ MEMBER WHO LOST HIS LIFE ON 9/11Des Plaines, IL (June 2, 2005) — Honoring a dedicated safety and health professional from New York and active American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) member lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Harry Taback 9/11 Memorial Scholarship fund was established today by the ASSE Foundation and Taback’s family. Harry Taback’s daughters Tracy, Cheryl and Lori of Staten Island, NY, are donating $23,000 to the ASSE Foundation to create this scholarship fund in remembrance of Taback’s commitment to preventing workplace injuries and illnesses.
“Through the support of Taback’s daughters the Harry Taback 9/11 Memorial Scholarship will send a lasting memory of their father’s dedication to the safety profession and the ASSE Foundation,” said ASSE Foundation Chair Kennith D. Brock, CSP. “This scholarship will provide aid to students pursuing a career in occupational safety and health, and allow them to carry on Harry’s mission of protecting others.” A resident of Staten Island, NY, Taback was among the thousands lost in the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks. He was executive vice president in risk control strategy and consulting, and a managing regional director for Marsh and McLennan in New York City. Taback worked in risk management for much of his career, serving clients throughout the world. A longtime ASSE Foundation supporter, Taback was integral in helping establish one of the ASSE Foundation’s first corporate scholarships through Marsh. A Professional Engineer (P.E.) and member of the ASSE Metropolitan Chapter, Taback completed his undergraduate degree at New York University. The Taback family will present the donation during ASSE’s annual Professional Development Conference this June 12-15 in New Orleans. The ASSE Foundation will annually award a $1,000 scholarship to an undergraduate or graduate pursuing a degree in the occupational safety, health and environmental field. Applicants must be an ASSE student member and a U.S citizen, have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0, are currently enrolled in 12 or more semester hours, and have completed at least 60 semester hours.
