AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS KIDS' SAFETY ON-THE-JOB POSTER
CONTEST WINNERS FROM FLORIDA, INDIANA, UTAH, VIRGINA

     DES PLAINES, IL (March 23, 2004) - The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) today announced the winners of its second annual kids' 'Safety-on-the-Job' poster contest for ASSE members' children ages five through 12. One entry from each of the four age groups was selected as the top poster in illustrating safety-on-the-job. The winners are Brady McCullion, 6, of Ashburn, VA, in the 5-6 age group; Deanna Simons, 7, of Jacksonville, FL, in the 7-8 age group; James A. Kriner, 9, of Anderson, IN, in the 9-10 age group; and, Jennifer Millet, 12, of West Valley City, UT, in the 11-12 age group.

     The contest is part of the annual ASSE North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) week celebration taking place this year from May 2-8. The winning four posters will be featured on the NAOSH poster, and each of the winners will receive a $1,000 savings bond. The contest is open to all ASSE members' children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

     ASSE President James 'Skipper' Kendrick, CSP, said today, "ASSE applauds all of the children who entered this contest for their hard work and creativity in illustrating safety-on-the-job topics from following safety procedures to wearing the proper protective equipment such as a hard hat and goggles. We initiated this poster contest as a way to help our ASSE members communicate workplace safety awareness to not only their children, but to fellow workers around the globe."

     Brady McCullion's winning poster in the 5-6 age group, titled "Lockout/Tagout Works," tackles the topic of properly locking down and tagging machinery, equipment or systems, to ensure that it is shut off from use, so no one is injured during maintenance and servicing operations. Brady, 6, enjoys swimming and playing soccer. His father, Michael McCullion, a member of ASSE Region VI's National Capital Chapter, sponsored Brady's entry.

     The winning poster in the 7-8 age group by Deanna Simons, titled "Always Safety," focuses on using the proper protective equipment at a construction site such as wearing hard hats and utilizing safety harnesses. Deanna, 7, enjoys playing jump rope and participating in Brownies. Deanna's ASSE sponsor is her father, Lance Simons of ASSE Region IV's North Florida Chapter.

     James A. Kriner's winning poster in the 9-10 age group, titled "Be Safe Wear a Helmet," demonstrates helmet safety, showing crane workers, race car drivers, and police on horseback wearing the proper head gear to prevent a workplace injury. James, 9, enjoys swimming, reading and drawing.

     He is sponsored by his father, James G. Kriner, of ASSE Region VII's Central Indiana Chapter.

     The winning poster in the 11-12 age group by Jennifer Millet, titled "Your Decisions Don't Affect Just You," conveys the importance of preventing workplace accidents and making sure everyone returns home safely each and every day to their family. Jennifer, 12, enjoys soccer, reading, singing and playing musical instruments. Jennifer's ASSE sponsor is her father, Richard Millet of ASSE Region II's UT Chapter.

     There were two runners-up in each of the four age categories. The runners-up in the age 5-6 category are Ryan Niewoehner, 5, of Sewell, NJ, for his poster titled "Safety Dad," sponsored by his father Daniel Niewoehner of ASSE Region VIII's Philadelphia Chapter; and Kyle Niedenthal, 6, of Eureka, MO, for his poster titled "Proper Work Zones Save Lives!" sponsored by his father, Gilbert Niedenthal of ASSE Region V's St. Louis Chapter.

     The runners-up in the age 7-8 category are Timmy Holzberg, 8, of Ellicott City, MD, for his poster titled "Don't Be a Hard Head…Always Wear a Hard Hat!" sponsored by his father Peter Holzberg of ASSE Region VI's Chesapeake chapter; and Jonathan Baggett, 8, of Huntington Valley, PA, for his poster on how to find safety information, titled "Log-on to Safety," sponsored by his father Harvey Dale Baggett of ASSE Region VIII's Philadelphia Chapter.

     The runners-up in the age 9-10 category are Pooja V. Shah, 9, of Waltham, MA, for her poster on office safety titled "A Safe Day is a Beautiful Day" sponsored by her mother Smriti V. Shah of ASSE Region VIII's Greater Boston Chapter; and Bryan R. Duerfeldt, 10, of Bloomington, MN, for his poster titled "No Matter Who You Are, No Matter What You Do, Safety Is Important for You" sponsored by ASSE member Karen Stoller of ASSE Region V's Northwest Chapter.

     The runners-up in the age 11-12 category are Elizabeth Marsh, 11, of Quitman, AR, for her poster titled "Safety on a Farm" sponsored by her father Geoffrey Marsh of ASSE Region III's AR Chapter; and Matthew Hunnicutt, 12, of Montague, NJ, for his poster on safety when working with robots titled "Safety Rules Are Good for Your Health" sponsored by his father William Hunnicutt, a member of ASSE Region VIII's NJ Chapter.

     All those who entered the contest will receive gift certificates and have their posters displayed at the ASSE June 2004 Professional Development Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV.
