DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS (March 21, 2000)
- The United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation just awarded a major grant
to the American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) Foundation to provide
scholarships for students focusing their education on safety and health.
Known as the UPS Educational Scholarship for Safety and Health, the
annual grant for $13,750 will provide scholarships for two seniors and
two juniors pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health or a related
area such as in safety engineering, safety management, safety systems,
environmental science, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire science or
other related safety, health or environmental program. This is part of
a unique, four-year UPS Foundation Scholarship program providing a total
of $82,500 to the ASSE Foundation.
"Since the ASSE Foundation was formed, scholarships from safety-focused
organizations such as UPS have helped over 50 students from around the
country pursue their academic studies and research in the all-important
area of safety," ASSE Foundation Manager Mary Goranson said. "UPS is to
be commended for their continued efforts to promote workplace safety and
health and for giving students the opportunity to do so."
The recipients are selected based on their academic performance, interest
in the safety profession and related extracurricular activities. In addition
to the scholarship awards, the UPS Foundation will provide the two junior
winners a trip to the annual ASSE Professional Development Conference
to be held in Orlando, Florida, where the awards will be announced. Over
2,000 safety professionals from around the world attend the annual ASSE
conference.
Based in Des Plaines, Illinois, the 89-year-old ASSE is a global association
which provides professional development and representation for those engaged
in the practice of safety, health and the environment and providing services
to the private and public sectors to protect people, property and the
environment. It has 33,000 members. In 1990 the ASSE recognized a major
growth in the profession and chartered the ASSE Foundation which is designed
to provide professional development and financial resources to qualified
individuals and non-profit organizations, and, to advance safety and health
development, research and education in the public interest.
"Safety touches upon all of us every minute of our lives and wherever
we are, so it is imperative that we continue to educate and provide safety
professionals with the tools and information they need in an effort to
maintain a safe environment for all," Goranson said. "UPS is helping us
do that."
Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Georgia, the UPS Foundation identifies
specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues. The
Foundation's major initiatives currently include programs that support
family and workplace literacy, prepared and perishable food distribution,
and volunteerism. Corporate grants benefiting organizations such as the
ASSE Foundation positively impact communities today, the UPS Foundation
notes.
The ASSE Foundation scholarship applications and information are available
on the web site at www.asse.org/founscho.htm. The deadline each year for
scholarship applications is March 1 and are reviewed by the Foundation
Scholarship Award and Selection Committee. The winners will be notified
May 1, 2000 and will be announced at the ASSE Professional Development
Conference in Orlando, Florida this year.
