DES PLAINES, IL (May 3, 2000) - The American
Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently awarded 11 scholarships
to students across the country for their dedication to the safety profession.
The awards were granted to both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing
degrees in occupational safety and health or related fields. The ASSE Foundation,
designed to provide professional development and financial resources to
qualified individuals and non-profit organizations, is pleased to grant
the awards made possible by corporations, individual members, and ASSE Chapters,
Regions and Divisions.
UPS offered two scholarships to undergraduate juniors and two to undergraduate
seniors this year. Karen S. Duke and Amanda Zych received the undergraduate
junior awards. Karen, from New Orleans, is concentrating in Environmental
Health at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, LA, and Amanda is
an Environmental Health major at Salisbury State University in Salisbury,
MD. Amanda is from Poolesville, MD. Eric J. Babcock, Fire Protection Engineering
major at the University of Maryland is from Ellicott City, MD. He will
receive the undergraduate senior scholarship along with Jennifer L. Martin,
an Occupational Safety and Hygiene Management major at Millersville University
in West Chester, PA.
Liberty Mutual granted a scholarship to undergraduate student Kara N.
Herber, an Industrial Health and Safety major at Oakland University in
Oakland County, MI. Kara is from Port Huron, MI. Graduate student Sunshyne
A. Chapman will also receive a scholarship from Liberty Mutual. Sunshyne,
from Wellston, OK, is studying Education of Industrial Safety at the University
of Central Oklahoma.
The first-ever Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety was awarded
to graduate student Angela DiDomenica Astin from Christiansburg Virginia.
She is currently studying Human Factors, Occupational Safety at Virginia
Tech. This scholarship was established by ASSE Vice President of Finance-elect
Marcella R. Thompson, who was able to enter the safety profession through
an educational grant.
Willie M. Lindsey from Murray, KY accepted the James P. Kohn Memorial
Scholarship. He is pursuing an Occupational Safety and Health degree from
Murray State University, KY. Jackie D. Thigpen, also from Murray State
University accepted the Delmar E. Tally, CSP Scholarship for her work
in Environmental Health. The Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship was awarded
to Brian J. Graves of Eureka, IL for his work in Safety at Illinois State
University.
The ASSE Foundation commends these students for their hard work and
commitment to the environmental, safety and health professions. For additional
