JAMES S. KEMPER FOUNDATION DONATES TO
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

      DES PLAINES, IL (April 15, 2003)- Supporting education in the field of occupational safety, health and the environment, the Long Grove, Illinois-based James S. Kemper Foundation recently donated $1,000 to the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF).

Named after its founder, the James S. Kemper Foundation was established in 1942 as an independent private foundation to support higher education. James S. Kemper was founder of the Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company and Kemper Insurance Companies. Kemper Insurance, a leading provider of property-casualty insurance, and Kemper's related companies have 67 employees who are members of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).

Thomas Hellie, Ph.D., James S. Kemper Foundation Executive Director, said, "We are proud to help the ASSEF in providing college scholarships to the next generation of safety professionals."

This year the ASSEF is awarding nearly $60,000 in scholarships to occupational safety, health and environment undergraduates and graduates. The scholarships will be presented during ASSE's Professional Development Conference and Exposition this June 22-25 in Denver, CO.

Chartered in 1990, the ASSEF is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Funding for the ASSEF comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development.
