DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION COMMITMENT TO
SAFETY ILLUSTRATED IN CONTINUED SUPPORT OF
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS
FOUNDATION'S RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

DES PLAINES, IL (January 8, 2003) -- Illustrating its continued commitment to workplace safety, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund donated $25,000 to the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation (ASSEF) that will fund student scholarships and research. In announcing the gift today, ASSEF Manager Mary Goranson said the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund has donated $100,000 over four years to the Foundation further demonstrating its ongoing commitment to occupational safety and education.

"Corporate commitment to safety is the mark of a mark of a leading corporation. This gift not only illustrates that but further defines DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund's ongoing commitment to safety, their employees, their customers and the communities they do business in," ASSE Foundation Chair Karl A. Jacobson said today. "Their donation today will again help students pursue their dreams and academic studies in occupational safety and health, support several key research projects and assist in developing accredited college degree programs, critical towards meeting the growing demand of safety professionals."

The DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund supports their corporation's core set of themes and criteria that include programs that "demonstrate leadership, innovation, being a model of effective change, organizational self-sufficiency, empowered people, involved employees, teamwork, continuous improvement and results." The DaimlerChrysler Corporation is a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG and a Fortune 50 company that employs more than 425,000 people throughout the world.

This year the ASSEF will award nearly $50,000 in annual scholarships and professional development grants for students pursuing a degree in safety engineering, safety management, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental safety, health or other safety-related fields. Applicants must be an ASSE member or ASSE student member. To be considered for a scholarship, undergraduates must have a grade point (GPA) of at least 3.2 out of 4.0, have completed at least 60 semester hours and are currently taking at least 12 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 and take at least nine semester hours.

To date there are 18 ASSEF undergraduate awards one can apply for and three graduate awards. This is in addition to the research and professional development grants also available.

"This is a testament to the fact that our members recognize that continued education, mentoring new students, research and professional development contributes directly to everyone's improved quality of life as the recipients of these grants and scholarships move into positions where they are responsible for the workplace safety of their fellow employees and friends," Jacobson added. "We applaud DaimlerChrysler for continuing to step up to the plate to help make a difference."
