Savoy, Illinois (February 16, 2001) -- As the Daytona
500 kicks February 16, 2001—The Board of Certified Safety Professionals
(BCSP), in collaboration with the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation
(ASSEF), wishes to announce the completion of the Career Guide to the
Safety Profession (2nd Edition). The free guide provides an overview
of the safety profession, details career options and provides key educational
preparation guidelines. The Career Guide is a major resource tool
for those considering a career in safety—a profession with significant opportunities
not only here in the U.S. but on an international scale as well.
The first edition of the Career Guide, published in 1997, was
met with great success by the safety community. This new edition better
encompasses today's safety trends and developments. As with the last edition,
the new booklet profiles practicing safety professionals, details the
areas where safety professionals can specialize, addresses salaries and
advancement opportunities and offers guidance on becoming a safety professional.
"As safety has become a top priority for consumers and corporations
and their investors, so too has the need for safety professionals," Edwin
P. Granberry, Jr., Chairman of the ASSE Foundation, said. "Society is
demanding safer places in which to work and live and to meet those needs
companies are hiring occupational safety and health experts at a rapid
speed. This Career Guide serves as an extremely useful tool for
everyone, especially students and faculty, in the field of safety."
"In order to ensure that safety is an integral part of the corporate
culture today, employers look for people who have the necessary knowledge
and skills to be effective safety leaders," said BCSP's President, Jan
Simon Clark, CSP, CIH. "The Career Guide conveys to students looking
for a rewarding, people-focused career what career paths are open and
how to prepare for them."
The Career Guide to the Safety Professional is available through
BCSP and the ASSE Foundation. The booklet will also be made available
to colleges and universities with safety programs.
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals, governed by
14 directors and sponsored by six organizations, establishes standards for
and verifies minimum competency in professional safety practice. BCSP also
evaluates CSPs for compliance with re-certification requirements. Today,
almost 17,000 individuals have achieved the Certified Safety Professional
designation. BCSP is a nationally accredited, non-profit corporation chartered
in Illinois, with headquarters in Savoy. More information about BCSP, the
CSP and professional safety practice is available at http://www.bcsp.org.
The ASSEF was founded in 1990 as a charitable organization that advances
safety, occupational health and environmental development, research and
education. It is active in providing scholarships and research for the
safety, occupational health and environmental professions and provides
professional development and financial resources to qualified individuals
and non-profit organizations. Founded in 1911, the American Society of
Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest and largest society of safety professionals
in the world with 32,000 members.
