DES PLAINES, IL (August 20, 2002) - Recognizing the importance of the safety and health profession in reducing workplace injuries and illnesses, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation announced today the 2002-2003 scholarships available for undergraduates and graduates in the field of occupational safety, health and the environment.
The Foundation will award nearly $50,000 in annual scholarships and professional development grants this year for students pursuing a degree in safety engineering, safety management, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental safety, environmental health or other safety-related fields. Applicants must be a student member of ASSE, unless specified.

The Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from now until December 1, 2002, and the winners will be posted on the Foundation's website by April 1, 2003.
Undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 out of 4.0, have completed at least 60 semester hours and are currently taking at least 12 semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 and take at least nine semester hours, in addition to having an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
The ASSE Foundation scholarships available for undergraduates pursuing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment include a $1,000 America Responds Memorial Scholarship honoring the ASSE members lost in the September 2001 attacks, a $2,000 M. McGrath Distinguished Service Award Scholarship, two $1,000 Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarships, and various United Parcel Service (UPS) undergraduate and diversity scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $4,000 awards.
For the first time, the Gulf Coast Past Presidents Scholarship will offer one $1,000 award for part-time or full-time undergraduates. One graduate and three undergraduate scholarships, each $3,375, are available from the ASSE Ford Motor Company Scholarship Fund for women pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health. The James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship program will award one $2,000 scholarship for students pursuing a graduate degree in occupational safety and health. The Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety is a $1,000 graduate scholarship available for both student ASSE members and non-members. In addition, there are four new ASSE chapter and regional scholarships available for graduates and undergraduates.
