DES PLAINES, IL (August 19, 2002) - Recognizing the continuing importance of workplace safety, the Northeastern Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently donated $15,000 to the ASSE Foundation for education scholarships. The chapter has donated nearly $55,000 in total for occupational safety, health and environment scholarships.

Northeastern Illinois Chapter president Andrew Tudor of Des Plaines, chapter president-elect Bernard Jones of Elk Grove Village, and chapter delegate Eugene Satrun of Mokena, along with ASSE Region V Vice President Jack Vetter of St. Peters, MO, presented the donation to Edwin P. Granberry Jr., past ASSE Foundation Chair, at ASSE's June annual conference in Nashville, TN.

The funds will be used for occupational safety, health and environment scholarships for undergraduates and graduates in the north and west suburban Chicago areas. Based in Itasca, the Northeastern Illinois Chapter is one of three ASSE chapters to establish an endowed scholarship fund.

Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $390,000 over the past year from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.

Founded in 1911, ASSE is the oldest and largest professional safety organization and is dedicated to protecting people, property and the environment. Its over 30,000 members manage, supervise, and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education.
