DES PLAINES, IL (August 1, 2002) - The American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) Greater Boston Chapter recently donated $2,500 to the ASSE Foundation in remembrance of safety professional Norm LaMontagne of Weymouth, MA, who passed away this spring. The funds will be used for college scholarships, professional development and research programs in the occupational safety, health and environment field.

Greater Boston Chapter past president Michael F. Murray of Amherst, NH, presented the donation to past ASSE Foundation Chair Edwin P. Granberry, Jr. of Winter Park, FL, at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference this June in Nashville, TN.

"Our chapter is proud to present this donation to the ASSE Foundation in Norm's memory; one simple way to pay tribute to a man who provided so much to so many," said Dave Crowley, CSP, of Canton, MA, Greater Boston Chapter Nominations Committee Chair. " Norm's life is viewed by many as a symbol of what it is to be an icon in the safety profession."

An ASSE professional member emeritus, LaMontagne served various officer positions with the Greater Boston Chapter, including chapter president. He played an integral role in the creation of ASSE's Healthcare Practice Specialty and he received ASSE's Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award in 1989, recognizing his dedication to ASSE and the occupational safety and health profession.

Before retiring in 1990, LaMontagne served as vice president for Johnson and Higgins Insurance Brokers in Boston, MA, for 30 years as well as a safety consultant to Harvard University and its teaching hospitals. LaMontagne also helped develop a B.A. degree program in Industrial Safety at Keene State College, Keene, NH. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. LaMontagne received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, in 1951 and was a graduate of Weymouth High School. He was husband of the late Mary LaMontagne and he is survived by his five children and 11 grandchildren.

Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $320,000 over the past year from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.

Founded in 1911, ASSE is the oldest and largest professional safety organization and is dedicated to protecting people, property and the environment. Its over 30,000 members manage, supervise, and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education.
