MARYLAND RESIDENTS DONATE TO RESEARCH, EDUCATION

DES PLAINES, IL (June 3, 2002) -Based in Baltimore, MD, the Chesapeake Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers(ASSE) recently presented the ASSE Foundation with a $1,500 check to be directed to the James P. Kohn Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Established in memory of ASSE member James P. Kohn, each year the Foundation awards a $2,000 scholarship to a graduate student pursuing a degree in occupational safety, health and the environment.

Kohn, Ed.D., CSP, CIH, was vice president of ASSE's region VI and served on various committees. Kohn served as a professor of Industrial Technology at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, holding a doctorate in safety management.

Applications for the 2002-2003 scholarship will be posted by August 15 on the ASSE Foundation website at www. asse.org/foundat.htm and will also be available by calling ASSE's customer service at 847-699-2929.

Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $260,000 over the past nine months from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. This June at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exhibition in Nashville, TN, the Foundation will award 15 scholarships to occupational safety and health students across the country, two research fellowship awards, two professional development grants and 14 awards for innovative research ideas. Funding for the foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.
