DES PLAINES, IL (May 28, 2002) - The American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation's (ASSEF) first recipients of its UPS Diversity Scholarship are undergraduates Mylissa Logan of Anderson, IN, and Carlos Garcia of Anniston, AL. The students will each receive a $3,825 scholarship presented this June at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition in Nashville, TN.

The ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarship Program, established earlier this year by the ASSE Foundation, is designed to help minority students in the occupational safety, health and environment field. This year UPS has donated a total of $25,000 to the ASSE Foundation for undergraduate scholarships.

Logan, a senior in Safety Management at Indiana State University (ISU), Terre Haute, IN, received ISU's Health and Safety Department high GPA award and appeared on the Dean's list. Garcia also has an Associate of Science in Drafting and Design Technology from Ayers State Technical College and intends to work towards a Master of Science in Emergency Management.

UPS has remained a dedicated supporter of the ASSE Foundation, providing funds this year for two junior and two senior undergraduate scholarships, in addition to establishing the ASSEF UPS Diversity Scholarship Program. Since 1996 the UPS Foundation has donated a total of $121,250 to the ASSE Foundation, providing funds for 23 scholarships.

Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social concerns. UPS is the world's largest express carrier and package delivery company, serving more than 200 countries and territories with 360,000 employees nationwide.

Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $210,000 over the past nine months from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. This June at ASSE's annual conference, the Foundation will award 15 scholarships to occupational safety and health students across the country, two research fellowship awards, two professional development grants and 14 awards for innovative research ideas. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.

Founded in 1911 and celebrating its 90th anniversary, ASSE is the oldest and largest professional safety organization and is dedicated to protecting people, property and the environment. Its over 30,000 members manage, supervise, and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education.
