DES PLAINES, IL (April 24, 2002) - Stressing the importance of research and education in reducing workplace injuries and fatalities, three chapters of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently donated a total of $2,100 to the ASSE Foundation for occupational safety, health and environment scholarships, research and professional development. The Orange County Chapter, based in Anaheim, CA, and the Greater Calumet Chapter, based in Gary, IN, each donated $1,000, while the Southwestern Ohio Chapter, based in Cincinnati, OH, donated $100.
Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $210,000 over the past nine months from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. This June at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference and Exhibition in Nashville, TN, the Foundation will award 15 scholarships to occupational safety and health students across the country, two research fellowship awards, two professional development grants and 14 awards for innovative research ideas. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.
Founded in 1911 and celebrating its 90th anniversary, ASSE is the oldest and largest professional safety and health organization and is dedicated to protecting people, property and the environment. Its over 30,000 members manage, supervise, and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education.
