DES PLAINES, IL (April 22, 2002) - American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) members Stanford H. Achi II of Lihue, HI, and Michael C. Donohue of Round Rock, TX, are the first recipients of the Delmar E. Tally Professional Development Grant, which provides financial assistance to practicing occupational safety, health and environment professionals, announced the ASSE Foundation Board of Trustees. Established last year by the ASSE Foundation, the grant is funded by ASSE members Delmar E. Tally and Betty Tally of Austin, TX, strong supporters of professional development who wanted to help safety professionals and ASSE members as they continue to enhance their professional skills.
Under the Tally grant, each year $1,000 is available for full-time safety professionals for occupational safety, health and environment certification preparation seminars, study guides and testing fees. The awards will be presented this June at ASSE's annual Professional Development Conference (PDC) and Exhibition in Nashville, TN.
Achi, the safety officer and technician at Trex Enterprises will receive a $750 grant to be put towards an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification preparation seminar, math review and ASP study guide. Achi has a BS in Environmental Health and Safety from Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR and is a member of ASSE's Hawaii Chapter.
Donohue, safety director at C. Young and Company Inc., will receive a $250 grant for ASP and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) study guides. A member of ASSE's Central Texas Chapter, Donohue has an AS in Occupational Safety and Health from Texas State Technical College, Waco, TX. In addition, he is both a certified Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) and Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
The Tallys are outstanding ASSE Foundation supporters and safety professionals, donating $10,000 to the grant program and nearly $20,000 in total to the ASSE Foundation since 1990. Del, PE, CSP, served as 1985-1986 ASSE national president and received ASSE's highest honor, Society Fellow in 1997. Betty, CSP, CHST, OHST, served as Central Texas Chapter president and is a dedicated occupational safety professional.
Through its programs the ASSE Foundation is committed to ensuring the future of the occupational safety and health profession by providing financial resources to individuals and organizations. Chartered in 1990, the ASSE Foundation has raised nearly $210,000 over the past nine months from corporate and individual donors for applied safety research, scholarships, fellowships, internships and professional development. This June at ASSE's annual conference, the Foundation will award 15 scholarships to occupational safety and health students across the country, two research fellowship awards, two professional development grants and 14 awards for innovative research ideas. Funding for the Foundation comes from corporations and voluntary donations from ASSE members - individual and through chapters countrywide.
